Mesalamine (Lialda) Side Effects

1. Overview

Mesalazine (also known as mesalamine) is a salicylic acid derivative. It has anti-inflammatory effect and it sometimes is used with other medications (e.g., corticosteroid).

Mesalazine is a prescription medication that is used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It is available as tablets, granules, suppositories and enema.

2. Common Mesalamine side effects

Most of the side effects of mesalamine appear on the gastrointestinal tract, Common side effects of mesalamine include:

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Mucous membrane inflammation of the nose (rhinitis)
  • Fatigue

3. Less Common Mesalamine side effects

Less common side effects may include:

  • Hair loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Back and joint pain
  • Flatulence

4. Rare side effects

Rare side effects may be serious symptoms in need of medical attention. If you experience any of these side effects make sure to tell your doctor.

Rare side effects of mesalamine may include:

  • Worsening of Colitis
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Wheezing
  • Unexpected bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Sore throat
  • Malaise

Rectal use of this drug might cause Anal irritation which is also considered to be a rare side effect.

5. Overdose symptoms

Overdose occurs when a patient takes more than the recommended dose. Mesalamine overdose symptoms may include:

  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rapid or deep breathing
  • Sweating
  • Vertigo
  • Vomiting
